When I think of the greatest accomplishments in my life, it all boils down to one (well technically three) moments.
The day I became a mother.
The moment I became a mother was such a spiritual moment for me. I felt then, and still feel today, that as a mother I am doing exactly what I was divinely designed to do.
Motherhood has been referred to as ‘the highest, holiest service of mankind.’
“When we understand the magnitude of motherhood, it becomes clear why (we should be) protective of woman’s most sacred role.”
-Sheri Dew
I find myself in awe of the beauty of the human body, from pregnancy through the birth process. A true gift for us as women.
Each individual labor and delivery to my children was nearly textbook perfect, unique, and beautiful.
Most of us get the care we need, we are educated by specialist, taken care of all along the pregnancy road, by trained doctors or midwives, and we can jump in the car at any given moment and have our babies in a clean facility where we can receive the care we, along with our babies need.
But what about women who don’t have this?
Christy Turlington Burns felt the same way. In her own words,
“I became a maternal health advocate the day I became a mom. Thanks to a skilled healthcare team, I survived a potentially life-threatening complication after delivering my daughter. Once I learned that hundreds of thousands of girls and women die every year from pregnancy and childbirth-related complications similar to mine I decided to take action. I knew becoming a mom would be life changing but I hadn’t quite envisioned how big a change it would inspire.”
After decades working as a model and activist and after surviving her own childbirth complication, Christy directed and produced the documentary, No Woman, No Cry to raise awareness about dire maternal health conditions that impact millions of women around the world. At each screening, audiences asked how they could help and Christy created Every Mother Counts as a response.

I am a running ambassador for EMC. I was looking for a charitable organization that I really believed in and could get behind and promote. After a lot of searching, I came across Every Mother Counts and it really resonated with me. I love what they are doing for women all over the world. And I love that I can help raise awareness by running— it truly makes every mile more meaningful. Each mile we run for EMC represents the miles that women won’t have to walk to receive “the critical maternal healthcare they need.”
