How Tos of Running

WHERE Do I Train?

One good thing about running is that you can train almost anywhere!  I have trained in parking lots, stairwells, outside on incredible greenbelts, on city/suburban streets, college campuses, tracks, parking garages, in the mountains, parks and inside on the treadmill.  Find what works for you, lace up your shoes and go!

HOW do I train?

If Alone- I generally prefer to train outside.  Find somewhere close to you where you can train and feel safe.  I, myself, don’t always feel safe training outside alone (I’ve had a couple experiences that I don’t care to repeat!).  However, it depends on the circumstances.  Just be smart.  Handheld mace is always a good thing when you are alone.  There is actual running mace out there that makes it easy to hold while you run.  Running in very populated pedestrian areas where many people are around you is always a great idea.  In my travels these recent months, each destination has had different circumstances.  With marathon training underway, I have found local gyms close to where we were staying,  the gym associated with our apartment complex, and local running groups.  You can definitely find a situation that works for you!

With a Friend- There are always people around you who are wanting to get into shape, or who may already be involved in their own training program.  Ask around!  Don’t be shy!  Most of the time, people would love to have the company.  Together,  you can motivate each other.  One of my dearest and greatest running partners is someone that I hardly knew from church who lived in my same neighborhood.  One day on a random meeting we realized that we were both runners!  Runners love other runners!  We have become the best of friends and bonded over many miles, having babies at the same time, serving in our church together and still meet up at races even though we currently live thousands of miles away from each other.

In a Group-  This is my FAVORITE way to train.  I have been to many cities and run with many different running groups.  It is an excellent way to run safely, make friends and get a pulse on the city you are in!  So how do you find a group?  Great question!  They are seriously everywhere!  The internet can be a great resource— I  love to talk to people and get the scoop by going to the local running store, gym, OR by entering a small race and getting to know people there.  One thing that I have learned is that people are generally good wherever you go… and if they’re runners it is almost a guarantee!  The people that spend time in these settings know what’s going on.  Don’t let the “group” idea intimidate you.   Everyone will have different paces and different goals, there is a good chance that at least one or two will be on pace with what you want (can!) do.  Have courage my friend, it will change your life!  I get e-mails and texts every week from my faithful running group friends.  I have dearly missed the groups I run with in my home town, but have had so much fun getting to know groups from different cities around the United States. As my mom would say, “You have lots of friends in embryo!  You just have to find them.” —Love you Mom!

This particular post focuses on the ins and outs of running but if running isn’t your thing, I encourage you to find your “thing”.  Whatever physical activity will get you going.  Try everything!  You are bound to find an aerobics class, hike, crossfit, home routine on YouTube — just do it and do if often!  It is incredible the way physical exertion enriches life and brings joy, friends, and over all well being.   Before too long, you will look back and be amazed at what you were missing!  It’s a gift you can give your family to have a healthy and happy mommy—- Maximize Mommyhood!  You’ve got this!

*This is a picture of my most favorite running partner of all.  He can’t run as much with me at this time because somebody has to stay home with the kids. 😉 We have run two marathons together and hopefully many more to come.  He is my #1 fan and greatest support.  I feel so blessed that he helps me to chase my dreams! XoXo

  2. I was just looking for this info for a while. After six hours of continuous Googleing, finally I got it in your web site. I wonder what’s the lack of Google strategy that don’t rank this kind of informative web sites in top of the list. Usually the top web sites are full of garbage.
